Dog-friendly beaches & cafes near Sidmouth
A short drive from the orchard and you're on the Jurassic Coast. Here's where your dog is genuinely welcome — and when seasonal beach bans apply.
East Devon District Council enforces seasonal dog bans on the busiest beaches between 1 May and 30 September. Outside those months almost everything opens up. We've flagged year-round spots first so you've always got an option.
Dog-friendly beaches
Jacob's Ladder Beach, Sidmouth
Dogs welcome year-round on the western end beyond the wooden steps. Pebble shore with rock pools at low tide. The Connaught Gardens path above is shaded on hot days.
Sidmouth Town Beach
Dogs allowed from 1 October to 30 April. Easy parking, flat promenade and plenty of benches — best off-season when the crowds thin and the light turns gold.
Branscombe Beach
A long, dog-friendly pebble beach with thatched cottages, a working forge and the Sea Shanty cafe right on the shingle. Quieter than Sidmouth and welcoming all year.
Budleigh Salterton Beach
Wide pebble beach at the mouth of the River Otter. Dogs are welcome year-round east of the Lime Kiln car park, with the South West Coast Path stretching out in both directions.
Ladram Bay
Red sandstone stacks and clear water on the Jurassic Coast. Dogs welcome year-round on the beach itself — a short scramble down from the holiday park.
Dog-friendly cafes & pubs
Clock Tower Cafe, Connaught Gardens
Cliff-top tables looking out over Jacob's Ladder. Dogs welcome on the terrace with water bowls — a good stop after a beach walk.
The Sea Shanty, Branscombe
Beach-hut cafe right on the pebbles. Generous breakfasts, fish and chips, and a relaxed dogs-everywhere attitude.
Dukes, Sidmouth Esplanade
Seafront pub-restaurant with a sheltered terrace; dogs welcome inside the bar and out. Sunday roasts worth the table-booking.
The Mason's Arms, Branscombe
Thatched 14th-century inn a short walk from the beach. Dogs welcome in the bar, the garden and the courtyard rooms.
Otterton Mill
Working watermill with a cafe, bakery and craft shops on the River Otter. Dogs welcome in the courtyard and outside seating.
Tips for visiting with dogs
- Check the tide. Several Jurassic Coast beaches (Ladram, Branscombe) shrink to nothing at high water — aim for the two hours either side of low tide.
- Pack fresh water. Pebble beaches reflect a lot of heat in summer; the sea is salty and not a substitute.
- Lead up on the cliffs. The South West Coast Path skirts unfenced edges in places — keep dogs on a lead between Sidmouth and Branscombe.
- Back at the orchard, please keep dogs on leads around the bell tents and away from the chickens. There's a dog-washing tap by the facilities block for sandy paws.
